Michaela Smith, APRN

Family Nurse Practitioner
Wichita

I've been interested in the human body for as long as I can remember. When I was seven years old, my parents gifted me a body systems book, and I was fascinated by how everything works together and how the body functions as a whole. That curiosity stuck with me. In junior high, I shadowed medical providers trying to find my place in medicine.

I originally planned to become a physician assistant, but during my senior year of high school, my path shifted to nursing. I graduated from nursing school at Wichita State in 2021 and started working in the Trauma-Surgical ICU.

My time in the ICU was incredibly meaningful. I cared for critically ill patients, supported families during really hard moments, and learned how important it is to advocate for patients. Two years into my career, I started travel nursing and worked in ICUs in Texas, North Carolina, and Colorado. Around that same time, while I was in NP school, I was introduced to functional medicine. This completely changed the way I thought about health. Instead of just treating what was right in front of me, I became more focused on asking why things were happening in the first place.

As I continued through my NP program and into my first provider role in urgent care, this mindset only grew stronger. I gained valuable experience treating acute illnesses, but I always knew I wanted to do more than just manage symptoms. Functional medicine was never just a side interest for me; it was always the direction I wanted my career to go.

When the opportunity to join Prairie Health and Wellness came up, it felt like everything aligned. This is exactly where I want to be. I am passionate about helping patients get to the root cause of what is going on, feel better long-term, and truly take control of their health. I look forward to walking alongside my patients in that process.

I was born and raised in Derby, KS, and now I've planted my roots there again, just down the road from my family. I live with my husband, Zeph, and our Australian Shepherd, Moose. Outside of work, I love being active, spending time outdoors, trying new recipes, and being with family
